Every parent knows how difficult it is to keep their kids entertained at times. One good thing about going on vacation is that it allows for new and unique experiences for the family. However, if you can’t vacation out of town for whatever reason, you may feel stuck living your everyday life, only without work or school. You may be worried that your kids’ time at home will be filled with television, cell phones, tablets, and video games. You would love to see them spend considerable time outside device-free for a change. Fortunately, you can create a staycation that’s just as good as going away. Here are some tips for keeping your kids entertained outdoors during your upcoming staycation.
1. Learn Pickleball
You may have never heard of pickleball, but this super fun sport has existed since the 1960s. It has become increasingly popular worldwide over the last few years. If you’ve never played, your staycation would be the perfect time for you and your kids to learn. This is an easy game to grasp and fun for all ages. You may consider it like a mixture of tennis and ping-pong. These days, many cities have public pickleball courts. Grab some pickleballs and Selkirk pickleball paddles, and get out on the court for a day of fun. You can also make your own court on a flat surface; get a portable pickleball net, and you’re all set.
2. Identify Birds
Bird watching is fun, particularly for children who love animals. Depending on your location, you could see many bird species just by remaining in your yard for a while or going to a park or wooded area. Be sure to bring binoculars for better viewing, and be prepared to identify each bird with a bird identifier book.
3. Have a Picnic
Picnics are always a great way to relax and bond with your family. Enjoy a lovely sunny day in a local park with great food. You can find a park with a playground for extra fun. When your picnic is finished, take a walk around the park together.
4. Set Up Camp in Your Backyard
Even if you’ve never roughed it in the wilderness, you can always try a safer and more convenient option: camping in your backyard. Get a family-size tent and sleeping bags. You can even get a portable fire pit. Stock up on s’more and hot dog fixings, along with plenty of snacks and drinks. Be sure to include your furry friend in the fun!
5. Create Your Own Backyard Movie Theater
Although you want to get your kids away from electronic devices, for the most part, an outdoor family movie night is fun. You can get a small projector and a big screen to set up your own backyard movie theater. Remember to bring a bunch of snacks and big blankets for spreading out in comfort!
6. Learn About Astronomy
Learning about the universe’s wonders is impressive, no matter who you are. It’s as easy as going outside and looking up. If you want to learn more, get a stargazing book. This is a great, simple way to learn to spot various parts of the cosmos. You may even see meteors! You can also learn a bit about space with your kids before your staycation so that you’ll be ready.
7. Plant a Vegetable Garden
Planting vegetables can be exciting for kids and adults alike. Give your kids some choices of vegetables they would like to grow and choose their own plants. Seeing the plants mature is interesting, especially when the vegetables begin forming. This is also an excellent way for your kids to enjoy eating a healthier diet because they’ll appreciate the experience of eating the vegetables that they grow.
You and your family will have a wonderful time on your staycation. Most importantly, have fun and spend quality time together. Also, take as many pictures as you would if you were away on vacation to keep the memories alive for years.
